Pikaplant: self-sufficient plants Contact with nature is one of the primary and deeper needs of mankind. In fact living in an environment rich in plants reduces stress, increases productivity and creativity.

There are various studies that demonstrate that contact with nature, even visual contact itself, has a significant impact on people’s psyche, it even appears to influence recovery times in particular.

This is the starting point for Joost and Daniel, the two founders of PIKAPLANT, an interior design start up in Netherlands nursing aspiration to develop products related to the vegetable realm, in order to improve the quality of life of us all.

In Netherlands, for example, if you are a patient in the intensive care unit, you are not allowed to take any plant with you, although the benefits it can bring are well known. The main reasons are two: the risk of infections and the impossibility to take care of the plant from the medical staff’s part.

So the PIKAPLANT’s team has started to project a solution to avoid the problem, by creating the perfect present for those who have a dear one in the hospital. About four years ago the first prototype has been carried out, Jar: a coffee plant inside of an hermetically sealed Jar.

The plant can live for years, inside its ecosystem-jar, taking care of itself in a self-sufficient way, by living in balance and harmony together with millions of invisible microbes. You don’t need to water it, because it lives out of just a little quantity of water, air and soil. Yes, because instead of trying to grow quickly, the plant learns to rationate the resources, by adjusting itself to the ecosystem and by modifying it’s metabolism.

A nice message and a wonderful example of sustainable life, as well as a hint of reflections on our lifestyle: this one being apparently unaware of the limitedness of natural resources.

PIKAPLANT’s Jar is a perfect product also for those who wish to put a little bit of nature in their homes and job’s contexts, those who till today didn’t feel like taking care of a plant, or are too busy to do it. Beside being a plant, Jar is an extraordinary piece of furniture, a mean conveying a precious poetic, reminding us of the importance of the contact with nature and of sustainability.

All over northern Europe PIKAPLANT’s products have become popular, making nature more accessible and people more acquainted with the subject.

We too, only need to let ourselves be inspired!

Chickpeas Hummus

Chickpeas hummus is a very ancient and traditional Middle East recipe. A delicious cream, of a delicate and aromatic flavour, with a bit of lemon acidity balancing its taste. It is mainly served as a hors d'oeuvre dish and a seasoning sauce, in the dugout pita bread, as well as on unleavened bread; excellent on the Indian chapati bread, too. To make the dish even more tasty, I suggest to add a sprinkling of paprika just before serving.

Ingredients:

250 gr of dried chickpeas
1 lemon
2 spoons of Thaina
2 cloves of garlic
Olive Oil
Parsley
Salt
Paprika
